first_imgLiverpool defender van Dijk is Terry, Vidic and Ferdinand rolled into one – Redknappby Freddie Taylor10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveLiverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is a combination of John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. That is according to former Reds and England midfielder Jamie Redknapp. The Dutchman has been a revelation since moving to Anfield in January and Redknapp believes he has the same attributes as three of the Premier League’s greatest centre-backs.He told Daily Mail: “We are only halfway through the season but already nobody comes close to Virgil van Dijk in the race for Player of the Year. He is the one player every team would love to have in their side.”Think of the best defenders in Premier League history — John Terry, Rio Ferdinandand Nemanja Vidic. Van Dijk is all three players rolled into one.”He reads the game like Terry and is a lovely passer, getting the ball out of his feet and spraying 30-yard balls. Van Dijk is blessed with the pace of Rio, too. Rarely do you see him caught out in a one-v-one situation.”While he is not as aggressive as Vidic, he has that same warrior spirit and will to win. He is calm, cool, composed in the air and is a brilliant leader.” About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

McCloud, who is from Tampa, was participating in a one-on-one drill… at least, he was, before he broke his defender’s ankles with a nasty juke. To add insult to injury, McCloud finished the play with an Odell Beckham-style one-handed catch. Luckily for us, someone grabbed a Vine of the impressive play.We can’t wait to see McCloud in college, well, at least when he’s not playing our favorite ACC teams.[Rubbing The Rock]last_img read more

‘It’s only Bayern Munich!’- Klopp wary ahead of Champions League tie

first_imgJurgen Klopp has urged Liverpool not to be complacent ahead of their Champions League Round of 16 tie against Bayern Munich. While the Reds remain top of the Premier League, Bayern has struggled this season in the Bundesliga, sitting third and seven points behind league leaders Borussia Dortmund.Having made his managerial name in Germany however, Klopp knows Liverpool must not write off Niko Kovac’s side.  Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? “We are still in the Champions League and I am very happy about in a very difficult game – yet (listening to some people) at some point it seems we are already through because it’s only Bayern Munich!,” Klopp said.“Have you ever looked at the team they have or how they are in shape now?”So we will be ready for Champions League and a very, very tough game.”With Manchester City cutting the Reds Premier League lead temporarily to two points on Sunday with a 3-1 win over Arsenal, Klopp has insisted he’s not nervous as Liverpool look to end their title drought. While some have suggested Klopp’s side should focus on the league and not European competition, the German coach is adamant the Reds can safely fight for both.”We will try for sure. Kane: Tottenham can win the Premier League

first_imgHarry Kane believes Tottenham can win the Premier League this season after strengthening their squad during the transfer window. After falling to Liverpool in the Champions League final to end their last campaign, Spurs opened their domestic season with a 3-1 win over newly promoted Aston Villa at home on Saturday.Tottenham, who finished fourth last season, have gone close to conquering the Premier League under Mauricio Pochettino – a runners-up finish in 2016-17 sandwiched between third place finishes in 2015-16 and 2017-18. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Messi a man for all Champions League seasons – but will this really be Barcelona’s? Spurs have bolstered their squad after two consecutive windows without a signing with club-record recruit Tanguy Ndombele, who scored against Villa, Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon headlining the arrivals. And star striker Kane is confident Tottenham can push champions Manchester City and Liverpool all the way this term after his brace in the win over Villa.”We kept with them for a while last year but they blew ahead after January,” Kane said.”We have to make sure we get off to a good start. Liverpool set the standard on Friday night and City on Saturday afternoon, so it’s important that we stay in touch as long as we can. “We have full belief that we can go all the way but there’s a long road ahead. That’s why we buy players: to strengthen the squad and have more competition for places. That’s what we’ve got.”We’ve got a good, hungry squad. Everyone’s fit and ready to go. The players that came on have to try to make an impact and they did. It’s important for us if we’re going to have a good season. Of course, it’s just the start now but throughout the winter time when loads of games are popping up we need everyone to contribute as much as possible.”Tottenham trailed Villa 1-0 at half-time but Christian Eriksen – who has been linked with a move away – came off the bench to inspire Spurs.Eriksen reportedly opted against a move to Manchester United as the Denmark international holds out for a switch to La Liga, where Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are believed to be interested.Despite uncertainty over Eriksen’s future, Kane stressed the importance of the midfielder. “Obviously I’ve been playing with Chris now for five or six years and we all know the qualities he has: the assists, the passes, the goals,” he said. “Whether he starts or is on the bench, the most important thing from all of our points of view is that he gives everything for the team.”Obviously, there’s been speculation about his future but as long as he’s training hard and playing as hard as he can when he’s here, that’s all we can ask for. What will be will be but we’re happy to have him.”That’s all the fans ask for as well: commitment. We’re happy to have them. We’ll see what happens but from our point of view we’ve got a strong squad and we’ll use that throughout the season.” Check out Goal’s Premier League 2019-20 fantasy football podcast for game tips, debate and rivalries.last_img read more

Skip Bayless: Jim Harbaugh Is College Football’s Best Coach

first_imgSkip Bayless speaking on ESPN.Earlier this week, a list of nearly 30 anonymous college coaches were polled on a series of topics. They were asked to name the overrated and underrated coaches in the game today. Those questions, however, didn’t bring about the most-controversial take. No, that belonged to one coach ripping Nick Saban and saying that anyone can win with the best players. That itself is a hot take. But then Skip Bayless decided to add some fuel to the fire.Bayless named the best head coach in the game today – Jim Harbaugh. No, really.“Nick Saban can recruit, but I don’t think he’s the best coach. I think Jim Harbaugh has proven to be.” — @RealSkipBayless pic.twitter.com/NqE4dmA7T2— FOX Sports (@FOXSports) August 22, 2018Bayless brought up Nick Saban’s checkered past in the NFL as a determining factor, then countered with Harbaugh’s success at the NFL level.Regardless of their NFL careers, it’s impossible to make the point the Saban is only winning because he has the best players. He recruited those players, which, last time we checked, was part of a college coach’s job.Skip Bayless has made a career out of these comments, so we shouldn’t be surprised.last_img read more

Florida 4-Star Freshman Out For The Year With Torn Achilles

first_img #Gators redshirt freshman David Reese out for year with torn Achilles https://t.co/RNPXu84u1f via @247sports— Blake Alderman (@Blake_Alderman) July 11, 2019After going just 4-7 in 2017, the Gators surprised many under newly-hired Dan Mullen in 2018 with a 10-3 season capped off by a Peach Bowl win over Michigan. For their efforts, the Gators were given a post-season AP ranking of 7.Though the Georgia Bulldogs still appear to have the SEC East on lockdown, the Gators appear to be nipping at their heels. As with any SEC team, Florida’s 2019 campaign will likely be dictated by the defense. For their sake, the defense will have to stay healthy heading into the middle of the season. (Photo by Chris Graythen/Getty Images)The Florida Gators are in line for a big 2019 season and have a realistic shot at the College Football Playoff. But it looks like they’ll have to make that run without the services of four-star linebacker David Reese.According to Swamp247, Reese has suffered a torn Achilles and will miss the entire 2019 season. The second-year linebacker was a redshirt who made four tackles in two games last year.Reese was a valuable pickup for the Gators in 2018. 247Sports rated him as the No. 297 overall prospect in the country, the No. 20 outside linebacker, and the No. 53 prospect from the state of Florida. The injury to Reese is a big blow to the Gators’ linebacker depth, as they have only a handful of experienced players left at the position.last_img read more

She tumbled to the court when she tripped in the second. The US Open champion recovered both times and avoided slipping out of the Australian Open on Saturday with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 win over Hsieh Su-wei.The fourth-seeded Osaka got a warning from the umpire after she spiked her racket in frustrating after Hsieh took the first set with three breaks of service. The 33-year-old Hsieh, who plays with a double-handed grip on both sides and uses a mixture of spin and slice and drop shots to unsettle her rivals, has taken some top 10 players out of majors before. She reached the fourth round last year here, after beating Garbine Muguruzu, and at Wimbledon, where she beat top-ranked Simona Halep. The 21-year-old Osaka was getting flustered, unable to dictate rallies and seemingly unable to find a way to deal with Hsieh’s unusual style. She found a way back, though, from 4-2 down in the second set when Hsieh was one point away from a 5-2 lead.Osaka got an important break, rallying from 0-40 to win five straight points and converting it with a deep, powerful backhand that Hsieh barely retrieved but can’t keep in play.Hsieh had a breakpoint chance in the next game but couldn’t convert, with Osaka saving it with another backhand winner that reinforced the change in momentum. Apart from the tumble, when she rolled her right ankle early in the game as she served for the second set – she held up her thumb to let everyone know she was OK – Osaka was in control until the end.advertisement”Anything that I can do to stay here a bit longer, I tried to do,” said Osaka, who’d never been past the fourth round of a major before last year’s U.S. Open, where she beat Serena Williams in the final.Asked how she managed to get herself back into the contest against Hsieh, Osaka smiled and said it was simple.”I have fun every time I play,” she said, even if sometimes it doesn’t seem apparent. She quickly reminded the crowd: “You guys didn’t see me slam my racket, that’s not something that I did!”Meanwhile, Serena Williams will continue her bid for an eighth Australian title and an Open-era record 24th Grand Slam singles title overall when she plays Dayana Yastremska later Saturday on Rod Laver Arena. A win for Williams on day six of the tournament will set up a fourth-round match against either her older sister, Venus, or top-ranked Halep. For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. Punch Bowl Social: Food, Drinks and Fun All in One Venue

first_imgDowntown Portland isn’t known for its must-see destinations. Other than a few great restaurants, it’s not on anyone’s go-to list when visiting the city. You’re more likely to meet other tourists than quirky locals at many of the area watering holes. But that all changed this July with the opening of Punch Bowl Social at the Pioneer Place mall. Locals head here for shenanigans seven days a week.A dining and entertainment concept imported from Denver, Punch Bowl is a behemoth of a space, incorporating nearly the entire third floor of one section of the mall. Mall employees and area workers now have a place to hang after work that isn’t a dive bar or an overpriced hotel chain. The concept is simple: serve hearty fare and classic drinks amid everyone’s favorite American pastimes. You can choose to bowl in one of two sections, or try your hand at shuffleboard, ping pong, Ms. PacMan, marbles or foosball. Sprinkle in a little karaoke and you’ve got yourself a winning concept. The 24,000-square-foot Denver location became a huge hit as soon as it opened in early 2013, thanks to a strong word-of-mouth and an egalitarian flavor. The same attitude drives the Portland location, although a few kinks need to be ironed out: the staff is sometimes lost or discombobulated, drinks are hit or miss (the coconut capirinha was particularly off-putting) and some of the food items don’t work in Portland (I am looking at you Pacific Northwest Chowder).Bowling for fun at Punch Bowl Social. But other things do work. The games are entertaining and harken back to your childhood. The two karaoke rooms are usually empty on a weeknight so it’s easy to sing to your heart’s content—the staff doesn’t frown upon solo singers like myself taking a turn at the mike. And the venue’s signature punches pack a flavor punch. The venue’s tagline is: “Imagine Paul Bunyon meets Don Draper.” Well, that isn’t quite the feeling one gets when you walk in the door, but you’ll definitely leave with a smile on your face and some good libations in your belly. This Cavern Revealed a 700-Year-Old Knights Templar Hideout

first_img Meet Phylloxera, One of Wine’s Most Dangerous Pests Highland Park Releases 2 New Limited-Release Bottles To Find Beauty In Yosemite, Just Whip Out Your (Honda) Passport WhistlePig Teams Up With Four Chefs on a New Whiskey Simply put, the Knights Templar were medieval crusaders.Established in 1118, they built a reputation as protectors of religious pilgrims throughout Europe and eventually even received the endorsement of the Catholic Church. At their peak, they held enormous influence as lenders to several monarchs and even owned the island of Cyprus. After the Middle Ages, the Knights lost much of their influence and went underground – literally.Recently, a British farmer was clearing a rabbit hole and found something much grander: A well-preserved hideout that has been seemingly untouched for more than 700 years.Photo: Michael Scott/ Caters NewsThe Caynton Caves in Shropshire are held grandly in local lore as an old headquarters for the Knights and this latest discovery would seem to validate those claims.Photographer Michael Scott went to explore and photograph the new find and his images reveal a stunningly-preserved example of Medieval living. A series of rooms and altars were found (some of the rooms were so small that they’re only accessible on hands and knees). His photos show an area that somehow stayed relatively untouched by graffiti, vandals and vagrants. The shape of the dwelling is said to be modeled after Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem where Jesus Christ is supposedly buried.Main Entrance to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, IsraelThere are several legends and rumors about whether the Knights are still in existence today. The Freemasons have continued with some of their symbols and traditions, while others believe the organizations continues operating completely off the grid in secret locations around the world.Regardless of the litany of stories surrounding the Knights, this is an incredible find and could offer clues into the past of the most prominent organizations of the Middle Ages.center_img This Cavern Revealed a 700-Year-Old Knights Templar Hideout Close Editors’ Recommendations The Best Documentaries on Netflix Right Nowlast_img read more

Andrew Holness, in his contribution to the 2018/19 Budget Debate, had announced the Administration’s intention to support the proposal for the deposit refund scheme submitted by the private sector. The Government has charged the private-sector partners to ensure that the scheme is fully operationalised early in the 2019/20 financial year; that the requisite infrastructure is in place to facilitate effective implementation, including the siting of redemption centres to allow for ease of return of bottles by consumers; and that a plastic bottle recovery rate of at least 85 per cent is achieved within the next four years of implementation.Additionally, the deposit refund scheme must be supported by a comprehensive and sustained national public education and awareness programme.“The Government will monitor the implementation of the deposit refund scheme to ensure accountability and transparency, and if deemed necessary, promulgate legislation to govern the scheme. Unrefunded deposits will be used to maintain the deposit refund scheme as well as provide support to the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) in its efforts to improve the island’s waste management infrastructure,” Mr. Vaz said.He told the House that plastic bottles, once collected, present an excellent opportunity for recyclers to catalyse economic activity, particularly at the micro and small levels, by designing and producing products for local and regional consumption.Plastics, by their chemical characteristics, take decades, in some cases thousands of years, to degrade in the environment.Hence, collection of plastics for disposal at landfills is not a sustainable solution in the long-term, particularly for small island developing states such as Jamaica, where land is a scarce and is an extremely valuable resource. The deposit refund scheme, which will provide cash to consumers who return their plastic bottles, is to be operational early in the 2019/20 financial year. The forthcoming scheme is intended to reduce littering and encourage recycling.last_img read more

$21 Million Allocated to Increase Parental Involvement in Schools

first_imgThe Parent-School Partnerships for Improved Literacy Outcomes Project has received an allocation of $21.37 million in the 2013/14 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House of Representatives. The project, being implemented by the Ministry of Education through funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), seeks to increase parental involvement in improving reading skills among Grade 1 students at 60 selected primary and all age schools. It is anticipated that for this fiscal year under the project, training materials will be developed; teachers and principals will be trained; school libraries will be established or improved; parent places in 60 schools will be established; and parent engagement workshops will be hosted. Physical achievements originally envisaged include: providing parents with the necessary training and support for positive parent/child home literacy activities, such as increasing the frequency for parent-child home discussions around reading activities; and contributing to the development of quality support systems for parents. It was also originally anticipated that the Parent Teachers Associations (PTAs) would be established and strengthened in participating schools, in order to facilitate home literacy activities. The governance structures in project schools would have embraced the active participation of parents and community stakeholders. The project which began in December, 2012, is slated to end in January, 2014. By Alecia Smith-Edwards, JIS Reporterlast_img read more
